Our history

Our path as a dog food manufacturer actually began 60 years ago. That is when the Magnusson family founded Kennel Airways. Kennel Airways bred Great Danes, a large and fast growing breed where an inadequate diet is quickly revealed in the bone structure and musculature. Food quality is one issue, cost is another. Large dogs gobble large quantities of food. The food budget is a practical reality juggled by every breeder. And the budget grows with the dogs.

At Kennel Airways, we struggled for several years to find a good quality dog food at a reasonable price. By learning everything we could about dogs and their feeding from the ground up, we managed to develop a dog food together with an American manufacturer of dry dog food that was perfectly balanced according to a dog’s nutritional needs. A tangible result of this work was when Kennel Airways was named Swedish Breeder of the Year in 1983.

Inspired by this success, we decided to begin manufacturing dog food on our own. In Håbolund, about five miles north of Stockholm, we opened a factory for production of oven baked dry dog food. After phenomenal development, where we quickly became the leading supplier of dog food to Swedish breeders, kennels and specialty stores, we decided in 1990 to the sell the company to a subsidiary of Lantmännen.

However, our emotional commitment did not just go away and in 1995, we founded Magnusson Petfood. Just as before, our business was based on a combination of knowledge and intuition. Something that did change was our awareness of the world around us our environmental footprint. This awareness has led to our factory being entirely run on water generated electricity and we reuse approximately 20 % of that energy. We constantly work on improving our energy efficiency as well as adapting our ingredients, inputs and equipment.

Regarding dog food our ambition was, and still is, to make as natural a product as possible based on high quality Swedish ingredients free from unnecessary additives.

This ambition culminated in 1998, when we launched Magnusson the Natural Dog Food. The Natural Dog Food was the first dog food to be controlled and certified as Organic by KRAV. In fact, Magnusson the Natural Dog Food was the first dog food in the world to be certified by an IFOAM accredited inspection institute.

In 2005, we launched Magnusson Meat & Biscuit, the only dry dog food on the market with all meat protein from fresh Swedish meat instead of meat meal, which is the dominating protein source of other dry dog foods. In addition, Meat & Biscuit also contains fresh eggs and carrots, and cold pressed rapeseed oil.

For us at Magnusson Petfood, it is a given that we only use the highest quality ingredients from Swedish farms.
